Job Description

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Piping Lead directs, supports, monitors, aligns, develops and unblocks the Piping team members across multiple projects to ensure technical quality, project success and a healthy Piping discipline (‘the Discipline) team.

The Piping Lead is involved at all stages of project lifecycles, with most effort going to the project execution phase. The Piping Lead is an important key player in ensuring the Operations Department achieves its objective of Successful Projects, and delivers on its core Areas of Accountability:

Within each Area of Accountability, the Piping Lead is accountable for:

High-Quality Deliverables:

  1. Accountable for the quality of work of all team members, defined as the total quality of each drawing of each person on the Discipline team, including:
    1. adherence to standards
    2. adherence to best practices
    3. technically correct solutions
  2. Accountable for all members of the Discipline team understanding the standards and best practices
  3. Accountable for understanding all client approved inputs

On-Time Delivery

  1. Accountable for adherence to and reporting of the project schedule of the Discipline team members
  2. Accountable for identifying and mitigating specific Discipline technical risks to all team members, to ensure adherence to project schedule
  3. Accountable for ensuring task tracking tool is accurately maintained and full visibility reported for schedule implications to the Project Manager(s) and Operations Leadership
  4. Accountable for effective monitoring and management of the overall work-flow of the Discipline, including preventing task bottlenecks and overload.

On-Budget Delivery

  1. Accountable for adherence of all Discipline team members to the discipline project budget
  2. Accountable for identifying and mitigating Discipline technical risks to all team members to ensure adherence to Discipline project budget
  3. Accountable for ensuring task tracking tool is accurately maintained for visibility of the Discipline budget(s) to Project Manager(s)
  4. Accountable for effective resource management to ensure adherence to project budgets

The Piping Lead is assigned and may take up many daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly activities, which will vary over time, in order to best achieve the above Discipline accountability.

While the relative balance will vary over time, the Piping Discipline Lead will split their time between leading their Discipline team and directly engaging in activities generally associated with a Senior Piping Designer.



  • Bachelor’s Degree, or associate degree in a related discipline
  • At least 10 years of Modelling and drafting experience in the marine environment producing functional and detailed models and drawings
  • Experience leading a technical/discipline team in the successful delivery of modelling/ drafting projects including assigning work to Designers and monitoring team progress in relation to both scopes and estimates
  • Must have experience leading large and small projects with multiple Designers and ideally experience leading multiple teams when projects overlap
  • Experience with Design and Model reviews including drawing markup – for back fixing
  • Experience holding team members accountable to Standards/Procedures and Key Performance Measures
  • Experience Coaching team members to improved performance
  • Experience in Client Specification review for developing work scopes as well as estimating work scopes and assisting Project Management in prioritizing and scheduling work
  • Experience working directly with clients through both meeting and correspondence.
  • Thorough understanding of quality and continuous improvement
  • Experience in the use of AutoCad and Ship Constructor
  • Experience working or managing a team in a Kanban or other Agile delivery system is considered an asset
  • Experience in the use of Aveva would be an asset
  • Experience working within a shipyard would be an asset

  • Eligibility for enrollment into Controlled Goods Program
  • Eligibility for Canadian Security Status (Secret or above)
